To the Editor:
Happy summer to all of you! As many of you know, we are in the middle of construction at Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL). Things are really happening at a fast pace around our Glencoe campus. Not only is new construction taking place, but we are also putting in fire suppression in the high school and at Lincoln. This means that the vast majority of our school campus is under construction. We are still maintaining all of our summer programs, community education offerings, and the field house is open as usual, but please take it slow when coming and going from GSL.
In the end, we are going to have an amazing upgrade that will support our teaching and learning opportunities for our students. The school project will have new STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) labs to continue to support our STEM initiative at GSL. We are now a fully accredited STEM school because of our connection with Project Lead the Way. PLTW is a leading national STEM program in our country. GSL should be very proud of this. We look forward to providing the necessary skills and tools our students will need in the future.
School is scheduled to start on Sept. 5. We are working on our traffic flow plan, bus routes, and the move from Helen Baker. These, along with the many other details that come with construction, will result in a busy, busy summer.
I look forward to the start of school and, at the same time, let us enjoy the summer months. I encourage all of our students to continue to read, increase your vocabulary, and get out and play!
Please take advantage of our summer food program. GSL will provide free breakfast (7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m.) and lunch (11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) at Lakeside Elementary from June 12-July 27 (closed July 4), and free lunch (lunch only noon to 12:30 p.m.) at Helen Baker on these dates as well. Meals will be provided to all children birth to 18 without charge and meet nutritional standards established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Until the next time, from all of us at Glencoe-Silver Lake Public Schools, enjoy your summer!
Christopher D. Sonju
GSL Superintendent
