Born-and-raised Minnesota author, Mindy Mejia visited the Sexy Women Can Read (SWCR) book club at Gert & Erma’s Thursday, June 29, to talk about her newest thriller novel, “Everything You Want Me To Be,” which takes place in Southern Minnesota.
The book follows a 17-year-old girl, Hattie Hoffman, who is murdered in an abandoned barn outside of the small town of Pine Valley. As Sheriff Del Goodman and others on the police team begin to investigate her death, it becomes very clear that Hattie had a lot of secrets in her life — including a highly comprising and potentially explosive secret online relationship — which makes the crime investigation even more complex. Told by three points of view, “Everything You Want Me To Be” explores who Hattie Hoffman really was and why someone would have wanted to kill her.
Mejia has finished her national book tour and now gets to enjoy her favorite part about releasing a new book — visiting book clubs and talking about the book in a casual, comfortable environment, like the book club in Glencoe.
Mejia grew up in the suburbs of the Twin Cities, but every summer she was able to spend a week with her grandparents, who lived on a small farm about half an hour south of Rochester.
“I really wanted to write about the area where my grandparents lived because I used to spend summers on the farm when I was a kid and I just loved being there. I loved going out to the farm where everybody knew everybody. It was such a close-knit community, but so independent at the same time; I loved that independence and stoicism that you can kind of see in small towns.
