Anna Kalvoda, 83, of Fort Myers, Florida, formerly of Mandan, North Dakota, died Aug. 30, 2017, at LeHigh Acres in Fort Myers.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Sept. 30, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Mandan, North Dakota, with the Rev. Nick Schneider as celebrant. Interment was held at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Anna Kalvoda was born April 12, 1934, to Frank and Helen (Kinc) Chloupek near Gary, Minnesota. The family moved to Mahnomen, where her father died in February 1938. After her mother married Francis A. Kalvoda in October 1939, the family moved to a farm north of Silver Lake, where she attended Pleasant Hill Country School and graduated from Silver Lake High School. She married Anton Kalvoda Sr. on Feb. 12, 1952, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mandan. They made their home on what is now the Kalvoda Century Farm south of Mandan and raised their 10 children. In 1974, they moved to Mandan.
Mrs. Kalvoda was active in her community and was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed woodworking and made many crafts and furniture. She also loved to travel, going to Europe three times. She and her husband traveled to Czechoslovakia to visit his birthplace. When in Rome, she shook hands with and was blessed by Pope John Paul II. She loved cooking and did so at Mandan’s Skelly Oasis Truck Stop, Mandan Hospital and various restaurants. Her children and grandchildren will miss her kolaches and apple strudels. She took a runner-up spot in a baking competition where her apple strudel won second place to a professional chef. Her faith and family were central in her life and she was active in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives.
She will be deeply missed by her sons, Anton (Cheryl) Kalvoda Jr. of Mandan, Bill (Linda) Kalvoda of New Salem, North Dakota, Bob (Robin) Kalvoda of San Angelo, Texas, Jim (Kathy) Kalvoda of Mandan and Tom Kalvoda of Mandan; daughters, Barbara (Jack) Pyle of Tierra Verde, Florida, Linda (Dennis) Ressler of Mandan, Diane (Bert) Muller of Williston, North Dakota and Ann Marie Kalvoda of Mandan; daughter-in-law, Kathy Kalvoda of Bismarck, North Dakota; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Francis J. (Micki) Kalvoda of Willmar; sister-in-law, Frances Lauzer of Park Rapids; special friend, Charles McConnell of Fort Myers, Florida; and a dear friend she always said was the sister she never had, Elda Charvat of Mandan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Anton on May 22, 1989; son, Terry Kalvoda; brother, Joseph Chloupek; and a friend of Ann Marie Kalvoda, Harvey Leingang.
