It was pretty close to a worst-case scenario for the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team as the squad hosted its first holiday tournament, held Dec. 27-28.
The Panthers went 0-2 on their home floor to take fourth place in the four-team tournament, and also lost their leading scorer in the process.
Guard McKenna Monahan – currently pacing the squad with 24.9 points, 4.3 assists and 4.3 steals per game – suffered a sprained left ankle in the midst of a 10-point performance during a 53-48 loss to Maple Lake in the semifinal round last Wednesday.
With Monahan hobbled, the Panthers were unable to hold on to the lead after claiming a 20-14 halftime edge.
Despite a team-high 11 points from GSL forward Mickalyn Frahm, the Irish outscored their hosts 39-28 over the final 18 minutes and claimed a 53-48 victory over GSL, pushing the Panthers into a third-place matchup against BOLD the following afternoon.
