A split of last week’s games dropped the Glencoe-Silver Lake girls’ basketball team 1 1/2 games off the lead pace of Watertown-Mayer in the Wright County Conference standings.
The Panthers suffered their second loss of conference play against visiting New London-Spicer, 58-51, on Tuesday, Jan. 30, to kick off the second leg of conference play.
GSL won 47-45 at NL-S in the WCC West opener on Jan. 4, but the Wildcats returned the favor in the rematch with three players scoring in double figures.
Guard McKenna Monahan’s game-high 19 points was not enough to garner a season sweep of NL-S, which has won seven of its last eight games.
Guard Miah Monahan recorded 16 points, with forward Mickalyn Frahm chipping in six points.
Dassel-Cokato, which lost 57-35 to visiting GSL on Jan. 9, had its eyes set on an upset win as the Chargers visited Glencoe on Friday, Feb. 2.
The Panthers went up double digits early on D-C, but the Chargers fought back and trailed by a single possession early in the second half before the hosts held on for a 62-49 win.
McKenna Monahan again led all scorers with 24 points, while forwards Zoe Christensen, Kasidy Cacka and Frahm posted 10, eight and six points, respectively.
The surprisingly hard-fought victory kept GSL from falling further behind the Royals in the conference race.
As this week dawned, W-M led the WCC West pack with a 16-5 overall record and a 9-1 conference mark.
The Panthers were second at 13-7 overall and 7-3 in the circuit – one game ahead of Annandale (13-7, 6-3). NL-S was fourth (15-6, 6-4).
After a trip to Litchfield (11-9, 4-6), on Friday, GSL will look to keep its conference hopes alive when it hosts the Royals at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
The Panthers, which defeated visiting Annandale 48-40 on Jan. 19, is scheduled to travel to face the Cardinals on Friday, Feb. 16.
