Monica Dorothy (Panning) Kamps, 90, of Waconia, formerly of Norwood Young America, died Sunday, May 6, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Society in Waconia.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 10, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Reformed Church in rural Hamburg with the Rev. Daniel Schnabel officiating. Carol Lagergren was the organist. Congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace,” “Softly and Tenderly” and “Beyond the Sunset.”
Casket bearers were Chad Eischens, Brian Kamps, Mark Eischens, Nickolas Smith, David Panning and Larry Panning. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Monica Kamps was born March 29, 1928, in Washington Lake Township, rural Sibley County, to Albert and Mary (Oelfke) Panning. She was baptized as an infant on April 8, 1928, by the Rev. H.J. Bouman at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg, and confirmed in her faith as a youth on March 29, 1942, by the Rev. W.P. Kraemer, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norwood Young America. Her confirmation verse was 1 Timothy 6:12. She received her education in Sibley County District 27 School, St. John’s Lutheran Church School in Norwood Young America, and graduated from Central High School with the class of 1946.
On March 13, 1948, she was united in marriage to Willard Kamps by the Rev. L. Wohlfiel at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg. In February 1955, they made their home on a farm in Benton Township, south of Bongards. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Linda, LaJean and Randy. The couple shared over 50 years of marriage before Mr. Kamps died on Feb. 1, 1999. Mrs. Kamps remained on the farm until March 2005, when she moved to Norwood Young America.
Before her marriage, she worked at Strutwear in Glencoe. In additional to being a loving wife, mother and homemaker, she worked with her husband on the farm and helped drive the gravel truck. She was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Reformed Church in rural Hamburg.
Mrs. Kamps enjoyed reading, embroidery, quilting, sewing, dancing and going out to eat. She treasured the time spent with her family, friends and, especially, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Linda (David) Eischens of Norwood Young America, LaJean (Robert) Smith of Norwood Young America and Randy Kamps of Norwood Young America; grandchildren, Chad and Sara Eischens, Jennifer and Stephen Hall, Mark and Theresa Eischens, Tamara and Travis Gatzke, Nickolas Smith, Susan and Jeremy Noyes and Brian Kamps; great-grandchildren, Quinn and Kiera Eischens, Rylie, Makenna and Chase Gatzke, Aiden and Gavin Hall, Jordan Eastlund and Dylan and Collin Noyes; sisters-in-law, Lorna Panning and Marlene Kamps; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Mary Panning; husband, Willard Kamps; sisters and brothers-in-law, Anita and Fred Selchow, Esther and Willard Kassen, Olga and Edward Young, Marie and Fred Miller and Joanne Kelsey; brother, Ralph Panning; brother-in-law, Orlin Kamps; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Violet and Marvin Panning.
