The Plato Blue Jays split its weekend set, defeating visiting Watertown 5-3 on Saturday, May 19, before losing for the first time this season in a 6-5 setback at Carver the next day.
Watertown proved to be pesky for Plato at Bluejay Stadium on a brisk Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, before the Red Devils knotted the score at 1-all in the third.
The score remained tied until the sixth inning when Jake VonBerge drove home Tyler Lang on a two-out RBI double to put the hosts in the lead at 2-1.
Plato upped its edge to 5-1 in the eighth. Von Berge drove home Spencer Lepel with a one-out single before Von Berge came home on a single by Mitchell Boesche. Chris Odegaard finished off the scoring by driving home Boesche on a chop single to make the score 5-1.
The Blue Jays needed the runs as Watertown rallied to chase Plato starting pitcher Adam Prehn in the top of the ninth. After three singles drew the Red Devils to within 5-2, Zack Stockman came on to relieve Prehn.
Stockman issued a pair of walks to force in one last run and make the score 5-3, but a pair of strikeouts and an infield grounder ended the contest with Plato securing its third win of the season.
Prehn earned his third pitching win after allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out eight batters. Stockman claimed the save with his one inning of game-clinching work.
Plato ran into the Black Sox on a sunny Sunday afternoon, but suffered its initial setback of the season after a late-inning flurry in Carver.
The Blue Jays and Black Sox were locked in a 1-1 tie through five innings, before the hosts took leads of 2-1 after six and 3-2 after seven.
Plato put up two runs in top of the eighth, but Carver countered with three runs in bottom of the frame. The Blue Jays mustered up one run in the top of the ninth, but could not draw even in the one-run loss.
Dylan McCormick took the loss after allowing three earned runs on four hits in one inning relieving Odegaard, who started and went seven innings. Odegaard struck out nine batters, allowing five hits and two walks with one earned run out of three given up.
At the plate, Matt Odegaard went 3-for-6 with a home run, three RBI and one run scored. Chris Odegaard went 2-for-5 with one RBI, with VonBerge going 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.
The Blue Jays are scheduled to travel to Hamburg for a Memorial Day contest at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon.
