Stewart City Council awards bid for street, utility project

The Stewart City Council awarded the bid for its “Group C” improvement project May 14 after holding an assessment hearing.
Andy Kehren, engineer with Bolton & Menk, said the city had obtained a significant amount of grant money to help with the project.
“There is $2.5 million in grant money coming to this community to do this project,” Kehren said. “We thought there would be more grant money because the city has incurred debt for the Group A and Group B projects.”
The total project cost is estimated at $3.82 million. The project includes utility and street surfacing work on Powers, Croyden, Grove, Bowman, Mowbray, East, Herbert and South streets.
Kehren said the project is mostly driven by sanitary sewer issues, and the need to reduce inflow and infiltration of storm water into the sanitary sewer system.
The city received seven bids on the project, with the low bidder being LaTour Construction, Inc., at $2.72 million. The rest of the total cost is in engineering and other costs associated with the project.
