The weather does not feel anything like fall as of yet, but the local athletic calendar is already turning to the autumn season.
Monday, Aug. 13, was the first day of practice for the Glencoe-Silver Lake sports teams as Panther student/athletes came together both indoors and outside to begin the process of honing their craft for the fast-approaching competitive season.
Scrimmages are scheduled by this week’s end for both girls’ tennis and soccer teams, with the netters also slated to begin competitions within the next week.
Coach Robb DeCorsey’s tennis players are set to begin the 2018 campaign at Jordan with a 10 a.m. start on Friday morning.
The competition comes one day after a scheduled varsity scrimmage at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
At 9 a.m. next Tuesday, the GSL tennis squad hosts its annual varsity quadrangular meet, with Blue Earth Area, Sibley East and United South Central coming to Glencoe.
The Panther girls’ soccer team is scheduled to take part in a four-team scrimmage at Hutchinson High School beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
Coach Chad Cronin’s squad is scheduled to begin its season with back-to-back home games on Aug. 27 and 28 versus Mayer Lutheran and Mankato Loyola, respectively.
The GSL volleyball team, led by coach Lori “Murf” Schwirtz, is set to host its annual multi-team scrimmage on Tuesday, beginning at 4 p.m.
The Panthers are set to start their season against North Branch at Hopkins High School at 5 p.m. on Aug. 25.
Also on Aug. 25, the GSL boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams, led by Jeff Delwiche and Josh Metcalf, respectively, begin their season in traditional manner. The squads will again run at Baylor Regional Park as part of the Norwood Young America Alumni Meet. Races are scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
Aug. 25 is a busy day in Panther Country as the GSL football team also hosts a series of scrimmages on the north side of the high school that morning. Sibley East and Tri-City United are expected to attend.
Coach Scott Tschimperle’s team, which fell just short of a trip to state last season, begin the fall season by hosting Foley at 7 p.m. on Aug. 31.
