To the editor,
Strange year 2020, not COVID-19 but how elected officials reacted to it. Republican Gov. Noem, South Dakota, believed people would do the right thing. She didn’t shut down schools or businesses, 184 COVID-19 deaths (0.02 percent of 858,469 population). Democrat Gov. Walz doesn’t believe people will do the right thing. He invoked peacetime emergency powers and forced schools and businesses to close. Minnesota has seen 1,919 COVID-19 deaths (0.03 percent of 5,680,000 population, 72.9 percent (1,398) in long-term care facilities). Minnesota has 0.01 percent more deaths by population despite Walz’s actions. This is leadership failure. This is today’s Democratic Party.
Gov. Walz continues to declare peacetime emergency powers (legislature doesn’t “grant” them). He has played dictator since March with no end in sight and can spend money with no legislative review. Democrats have shown their reluctance to abide by separation of powers. This is today’s Democratic Party.
Protesters destroy Minneapolis. Gov. Walz and Democrat Mayor Frey do nothing to stop the looting and destruction. Democrat Sen. Tina Smith called the riots “righteous” and that “Minnesotans are racist.” Democrat Ilhan Omar condemned the police’s riot response, saying “there was no way to justify it” (as Minneapolis burned). This is today’s Democratic Party.
Democrat Collin Peterson forfeited his vote (our representation) to Nancy Pelosi via proxy vote. Let this sink in. He has given Nancy Pelosi the authority to represent us. Peterson and Pelosi don’t represent us. Pelosi concentrated power to herself and a few others. Peterson is not one of them. This is today’s Democratic Party.
Early voting begins Friday Sept. 18, 2020. If you don’t like riots, cities in ruins, lost businesses, limited church services, or Walz’s emergency powers, then vote for:
President, Donald Trump; U.S. Senate, Jason Lewis; CD7 Congress, Michelle Fischbach, Minnesota Senate, Scott Newman; MN House, Glenn Gruenhagen.
Our votes determine our children’s future.
Daryl Thurn,
Green Isle
