By Lori Copler Staff Writer The GSL Panther volleyball team remains undefeated, now at 9-0, following Wright County Conference wins over Mound-Westonka and Dassel-Cokato last week, as well as capturing the crown at the Montevideo tournament Saturday. But the Panthers have sometimes had to fight to reach the crest of the momentum wave. Witness GSL’s 3-2 win over Mound-Westonka on Sept. 11, which head coach “Murf” Schwirtz called a “nail-biter, indeed.” The Panthers dropped the first two games (25-21, 25-22), making the third game a critical must-win for the chance of keeping their undefeated record intact. And GSL rallied to the task. “The girls started executing Mound’s weaknesses and minimizing basic serving errors,” said Schwirtz. “Mound is a very good team. They have a fluent and powerful front-row player who can place the ball in a number of places, and the first two games our transition was slow off the net.” The Panthers made some defensive adjustments, and squeaked out a 26-24 game 3 win. GSL then captured the next games, 25-20 and 15-8, to win the match. Clarissa Ober dominated over the middle of the net, as she has all season, with a record high of 37 kills for the night. tributed 12 kills, Courtney Lemke had eight and Krissy Garbers added seven. Courtney Lemke put up 50 set assists and also helped thwart the White Hawks’ attack with 34 digs. Cortney Konen and Emily Muetzel combined for 30 digs. Lexi Kerslake and Garbers were strong from the serving line, with only one missed serve each. The pair combined to serve up 36 balls. Thursday night’s 3-1 win over Dassel-Cokato was no easy romp, either, as the Panthers again rallied from a first-game (25-22) defeat. But the Panthers built on their momentum for the next three games, winning by steadily widening margins, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-18, to take the match. Ober again played solid offense with 30 kills, while Klockmann contributed eight; Lemke had seven and Garbers four. Lemke also had 40 set assists to aid the attack. Lemke and Klockmann each had 16 digs while Kerslake had 10, and Maddie Kalenberg, coming of the bench, contributed eight. On Saturday, the Panthers competed in the Montevideo Invitational, winning all four of its matches to capture the championship. GSL defeated Paynesville Area 259, 25-10; Renville County West 2516, 26-24, Dawson-Boyd, 25-18, 2517; and Wabasso, 25-14, 25-21.

Down 27-7, Panthers rally to beat Annandale
By Rich Glennie Editor t was pure drama Friday night at Stevens Seminary Stadium, as the Glencoe-Silver Lake Panthers had to rally — not just once, but twice — to beat the visiting Annandale Cardinals 43-33 in a breath-taking shootout between Wright County Conference rivals. Trailing 27-7 at halftime, the Panthers rallied to take a 28-27 lead with 7:54 left in the game. The Panthers scored the only third-quarter touchdown on a 39yard TD run by junior Jake Stuedemann, the second of his three TD runs. Trailing 27-14 to start the fourth quarter, GSL scored early on a 38yard sprint by junior fullback Dalton Clouse to trim Annandale’s lead to 27-21 with 10:43 remaining. Then came the dramatic turnaround. Annandale quarterback John Kalthoff, dropping back to pass, was sandwiched between two GSL defenders and fumbled the ball. GSL defensive lineman Ray Eberhard scooped up the loose football and sprinted 35 yards to the end zone. Suddenly, GSL was ahead. But before the Panther fans could settle back into their seats, Annandale roared back on a lighting-fast, four-play drive of its own. The drive was capped by a stunning 54-yard run by the Cardinals’ all-purpose back/receiver Matt Miller, who, as a receiver, had chopped up the Panthers’ secondary throughout the game. Annandale’s conversion pass failed, but the Cardinals had weathered the storm, momentarily, and led once more, 33-28, with 6:22 left to play. That was plenty of time for the Panthers, who used an equally stunning kickoff return by Stuedemann

All the runs were behind the left side of the Panthers’ offensive line. GSL’s sophomore quarterback Keaton Anderson ran two more times to the left side to move the ball nine yards to Annandale’s 32. Then Anderson fooled everyone on the third down. He went to his right and beat the Cardinals’ defend-

That proved to be plenty of time for the Cardinals, who had been smashing through the Panthers’ run defense and slicing up the GSL’s pass defense all game. They continued. The Cardinals began at their own 35 with the ensuing kickoff. Thanks to a GSL pass interference penalty, the Cardinals were at GSL’s 46 with a first down and 3:52 left on the clock. A screen pass from Kalthoff to speedster Brett Ashenmacher gained 16 yards down to GSL’s 30. But an Eberhard tackle of speedy halfback Nicholas Anderson for a two-yard loss and three straight incomplete passes stalled Annandale’s attempt for another comeback. GSL took over on downs at its own 32. Clouse rammed into the line twice to move the chains to GSL’s 44. Then Stuedemann found an opening and shot through the Annandale defense on the way to 56-yard TD run. Thalmann converted, and GSL went up 43-33. *** Linebacker Keenan Mehlos (shoulder), cornerback Derek Bratsch (hip) and left guard Nolan Lepel (knee) were injured during the Annandale game. Monday, GSL head coach Scott Tschimperle thought Bratsch and Lepel would be cleared to play Friday at (3-0) New London-Spicer. He was not as optimistic about Mehlos. If Mehlos cannot go at NLS, Tschimperle said junior Colton Lueders would start at the WILL linebacker. — Blitzing safety Ethan Maass made the hit that forced the fumble Ray Eberhard returned for a touchdown. “We disguised (the blitz) pretty well,” Tschimperle said, noting that all 11 Panthers of the field carried out their assignments. — Tschimperle said his boys stopped making excuses and, instead, started playing Panther football after halftime. “I’ve never been more proud,” he said.
