By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor Michaela Boesche had locked down her spot on this year’s AllWright County Conference team prior to the league tournament. The GSL senior compiled a 19-5 regularseason record, largely against first and second singles. Kelly Arnold, a junior teammate, had not clinched her award, however. Carrying in a 14-10 mark, also against mostly first and second singles, she needed to win two matches to get an All-WCC spot. She did just that, prevailing in

pressure-packed, third-set tiebreakers over Kelly Mendel of Annandale (10-8) and top-seeded Kristin Hedtke of Delano (10-4) to reach the finals of the No. 2 singles tournament. “It’s a big accomplishment for both of them,” head coach Robb DeCorsey said. Over the years, Boesche has put “a lot of time” into her game, he said; much of it while going one-on-one with her family’s garage door. “She’s so competitive,” DeCorsey said. “I call her the Ultimate Fighter. She fights and fights and fights for everything. “You have to beat her,” he added, “because she doesn’t beat herself.” Meanwhile, Arnold has gone from being now-graduated Mary Arnold’s “little sister” to one of the captains — with Boesche and senior Kelly Beneke. “She’s such a spirited player,” DeCorsey said, noting how Kelly Arnold has stepped up and become a leader — often by example. Take the WCC tourney. “She just went out there and got her all-conference award,” DeCorsey

GSL fights off a Dragon; Becker next
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor all-thieving Glencoe-Silver Lake defenders recovered two Litchfield fumbles, intercepted three Zach Kinny passes and needed all five takeaways to claim a 28-20 victory over the Dragons last Friday at Stevens Seminary Stadium. Kinny, a three-year starter at quarterback, was mostly brilliant while completing 20 passes for 224 yards and rushing 18 times for another 60. But in the waning seconds, while driving Litchfield to what he hoped would be eight tying points, Kinny hurled a pass intended for a wingback. Instead, the ball was picked off by senior Panther STUD linebacker Brandon Ebert at the GSL 16. The big play gave Ebert a football hat trick: 3 interceptions. “I just got to my drops,” he said. “Coach (Dean) Schwirtz always says, ‘If you get to your drops, good things will happen.’” With 19 seconds to go and Litchfield snapping the ball from the GSL 31, Ebert chucked the wingback at the line of scrimmage; then tried to keep inside coverage. When the ball came zinging his way, Ebert, who also has played offensive end during his varsity career, showed off his sure hands
Runners show off depth; get 2nd at DC
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor Despite season-threatening injuries to two of its top runners, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ cross country team continues to post strong results. After winning Waconia’s nineteam Run of the Lakes Invitational on Sept. 18 and placing second — behind only mighty Hutchinson — at GSL’s Caty Delwiche Invitational two days later, the Panther boys clai med second place at DasselCokato’s eight-squad event last Tuesday. The GSL boys tallied 59 points, only five off champion Delano’s pace. That’s impressive, particularly for a lineup missing sophomore Brandon Richter (foot) and junior James Tichy (knee).

Delano tacks 2nd loss on Panther volleyball resume
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor For only the second time this sports season, now in 18 decisions, the GSL volleyball team has tasted defeat. Like the first, the loss occurred in a match against a Wright County Conference opponent. Last Thursday (Sept. 27) at Delano, the Panthers fell in straight games. Scores were 25-15, 25-19, 25-14. Delano’s win, coupled with Hutchinson’s loss to Dassel-Cokato (in five games), leaves the Delano Tigers and Hutch Tigers sharing second place in the WCC; each with a 41 league mark — behind 7-0 Waconia. GSL, dropping to 4-2, shares fourth place with Mound-Westonka and Orono. DC is next at 3-2. (GlencoeSilver Lake has won head-to-head matches with all three teams — defeating Mound-Westonka in five games, and DC and Orono each in four games). At Delano, the Panthers committed only one serving error, but had seven serve-receiving errors, only three blocks and a 31.82 attack percentage (28 kills in 88 attempts). A look at a few of GSL’s individuals: • Courtney Lemke — 21 set assists, 4 kills, 3 service aces, 9 digs, 1 block. • Clarissa Ober — 13 kills, 1 block. • Krissy Garbers — 4 kills, 10 digs, 10 serve receives. • Stephanie Klockmann — 3 kills, 1 block, 7 digs, 15 serve receives. • Lexi Kerslake — 4 kills, 8 digs, 15 serve receives. After an Oct. 2 match with Hutchinson, GSL is at Annandale on Thursday; then home to New LondonSpicer and Litchfield to close its WCC schedule.

Defender Parker Kerslake (14) is in the middle of Saturday’s action at Watertown-Mayer, where the GSL boys’ soccer team collected its first win of the season — after 11 losses and two ties. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Panthers got second-half goals from Joe Fehrenbach and Nick Jenkins to pull out a 2-1 victory. Aaron Rhodes was the winning goalie.

Richter, who earned honorable mention on last year’s All-Wright County Conference team, was GSL’s second runner — close behind senior Jalen Metcalf — at the 2012 Panthers’ first four meets. In each one, he posted a time under 18 minutes. Tichy’s season started late because of an injury, but he posted GSL’s fourth-best time at Waconia and seemed to be coming on. But neither he nor Richter has run since the Waconia meet. Head coach Jeff Delwiche listed them as “doubtful” for any further cross country meets this season. At DC’s meet, Metcalf placed third overall after going under 17:45 for the sixth straight meet. Delwiche praises Metcalf, calling his training workouts “phenomenal.” Meanwhile, sophomores Isiah Herout, Jac Chelman and Garrett Ober are coming on, placing eighth, 11th and 20th overall, respectively. Seniors Kyle Polzin (17th), Tanner Konen (22) and Kyle Zajicek (30) are stepping up, too. MFT launches new season of leadership
McLeod For Tomorrow launched a new ninemonth leadership program in Brownton Thursday. After a morning of training, the 21 participants visited various Brownton facilities, including the new United South Grain facility northwest of Brownton. Above, Jeff Nielsen, general manager of United Farmers Cooperative, which partnered with Archer Midland Daniels to create USG, talks about the new facility. The group also visited the recently completed Brownton Area Civic Center, which includes the public library. At right, Librarian Beth Selle explains some of the library’s programs. The group also visited Barney Tadsen Field.

for the third — and most important — time. “He made a great catch,” head coach Scott Tschimperle said. The win kept GSL undefeated in the Wright County Conference’s new West Division. GSL, 4-1 overall, is 3-0 in the WCC West with one divisional game – Oct. 17 at Dassel-Cokato — to play. This Friday, the Panthers hope to celebrate their homecoming with a triumph over a rival from the past, namely Becker. The Bulldogs, seemingly always strong, are 5-0 this year — after pulling out a 28-22 thriller over Albany last Friday. *** Against Litchfield, the Panthers started fast, but failed to capitalize on all their opportunities. With the game’s opening possession, GSL quarterback Keaton Anderson capped a 66yard march by running 8 yards for a touchdown. With Litchfield’s first possession, Ebert (who else?) blew up the Dragons’ initial attempt for offense by forcing a fumble GSL defensive end Ray Eberhard covered at the Litchfield 30, Three plays later, the Panthers were back in the end zone. Not quite 6 minutes into the game, GSL led 14-0. The opportunities kept coming. Litchfield’s second possession ended with Ebert’s first interception, which set up GSL’s attack at the Litchfield 43. On third down, All-WCC safety Ethan Maass — playing both ways in halfback Jake Stuedemann’s absence (health reasons) — broke away for an apparent 39-yard touchdown. But a penalty for an illegal block wiped out the play, and eventually the drive. Litchfield put up seven points with its next possession; then GSL got a chance to answer. Starting from the Dragons 45, the Panthers marched to the 17 before losing a fumble — GSL’s lone turnover of the night. Two plays later, Ebert picked off his second Kinny pass, giving GSL’s offense the ball at the Litchfield 25. But a fourth-down pass from the 10 fell incomplete with 8 seconds left in the half. “They were hard hitters, ... very hard hitters,” said secondyear GSL center Michael Skoglund. *** Litchfield moved to a tying touchdown to start the second half; then appeared to be getting the ball back after forcing a GSL punt. However, Carter Pinske’s hit on Dragons return specialist Cody Rau forced a fumble Maass recovered at the Litchfield 17,

GSL head coach Scott Tschimperle enjoyed a light moment prior to his team’s WCC game with Litchfield last Friday. After a sack and a procedure penalty, Anderson found Ryan Kuester behind the Litchfield defense and connected with him for seven points. Tschimperle said end Derek Bratsch, who ran an under pattern, was the first target. However, with good pass protection, Anderson spotted Kuester, who ran a deep post route — as did end Reed Dunbar. “Keaton had plenty of vision and made a great play,” the coach said. On back-to-back plays early in the fourth quarter, Kuester ran a toss sweep to the left side for 29 yards and Anderson kept on a mid-line option to the left side for 27 yards and a TD. Tschimperle said Kuester made “a heck of a move” to get around a defensive end and turn the corner on his run. On Anderson’s run, Tschimperle said every Panther made his block. “It was just how you draw it up,” he said, After that, it came down to Kinny and Ebert. “He’s a great athlete,” Ebert said about the Litchfield QB. But it was Ebert who had the last say on this particular day. *** — More than $800 was raised at last Friday’s game to “Tackle Cancer” for the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund. — Tschimperle said Litchfield blitzed more than 50 percent of GSL’s snaps. — Eric Thalmann was 4-for4 on PAT kicks. Meanwhile, Dunbar blocked Litchfield’s third PAT kick. “It’s amazing how important those extra-point kicks are,” Tschimperle said. Overall, he thought GSL special teams had an outstanding game. — Becker’s aerial attack features Tommy Benson, a fouryear starter at quarterback, and favorite receivers Brett Watercott and Joel Hopkins. “They’re a tremendous football team,” Tschimperle said. — The current WCC West standings read like this: GSL 3-0 (4-1); Annandale 11 (4-1); Dassel-Cokato 1-1 (23); New London-Spicer 1-2 (32); Litchfield 0-2 (2-3). This Friday, Annandale is at New London-Spicer, while Dassel-Cokato visits Litchfield. — Tschimperle said Stuedemann has been cleared to practice and play this week. Otherwise, no one new has been added to GSL’s injury list. — Ebert’s list of contributions also includes kickoffs that are not only long, but with good height — which the coverage gang loves to see. Not only is his leg stronger, Ebert says his technique is better. “I’m keeping my head down,” he said. — Updating records of teams in Section 2 (Class AAAA): Hutchinson 5-0, Marshall 50, GSL 4-1, Dassel-Cokato 2-3, New Ulm 1-4, and Mankato East 0-5.

Cautious optimism emerging Hints for trees under stress among Minnesota employers
nesota Chamber President David Olson said. “To cash in on this long-term optimism, the governor and Legislature must take timely action to address these concerns – if they want companies to stay and invest in Minnesota now.” While 55 percent of survey respondents rated Minnesota as having a good business climate compared with other states, they also identified five key barriers that must be addressed to strengthen the business environment: • Taxes remain a key obstacle to job creation, identified by seven out of 10 employers as one of the two most important barriers in Minnesota. The tax burden continues to grow compared with five years ago. • The stability and predictability of government regulations are important factors in business decisions to invest in Minnesota operations. • Costs continue to rise for employers who provide health insurance. Businesses are not yet looking to eliminate the employee benefit, but are seeking ways to manage this cost. • Half the employers surveyed reported there are enough skilled workers available in their industry. When gaps arise, employers identify training rather than a shortage of workers as the primary workforce barrier. • Electricity costs continue to be a concern, and reliability is beginning to surface as a larger factor for some business owners and managers. Tax reform is certain to be on the agenda for the 2013 Legislature and the stage is already set for a vigorous debate. Business Barometer respondents identified four primary goals for any tax reform: Simplify; tax voluntary behavior; make revenues predictable; tax activity and not income. “All of those goals greatly challenge Gov. Mark Dayton’s renewed call for a fourth bracket in personal income taxes,” Olson explained. “If tax reform is going to help fuel an economic expansion, we are going to need a different strategy than adding more brackets.” Businesses recognize that what transpires at the Capitol has tremendous impact on their operations, said Joe Maher of UPM Blandin Paper in Grand Rapids, the new chair of the Minnesota Chamber Board of Directors. Eighty percent of the Business Barometer respondents said the governor and lawmakers play an important role in determining the business climate. “Because government can both positively and negatively impact the state’s business climate, employers are playing a major role in political discussions,” he said. “Our immediate focus is on the November elections as we seek to elect legislators who understand what it will take to create a pro-jobs environment in Minnesota.” The Minnesota Business Barometer Survey polled owners or managers of 350 Minnesota businesses with at least five employees. The sample surveyed accurately reflects the breadth of Minnesota’s business community in the areas of size, location and type of business (manufacturing, retail and service). The survey was conducted in July and August and has a margin of error of 5.3 percent. Editor’s note: This press release was submitted by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce.. Trees have been under stress again in 2012. Aboveaverage heat and summer drought conditions have provided a less than ideal situation. Following is some helpful information for newly planted trees, existing trees, mechanical equipment protection, fertilization, and pruning. According to the University of Minnesota Forest Resource Extension, in the Midwest region, bareroot trees and shrubs should be planted when the plants are dormant in the spring or at the end of the growing season (fall). Balled and burlapped, containerized, and container grown plants can be planted throughout the growing season, but with caution during the summer months. If planting in the fall, the recommendation is to plant four weeks before the soil temperature drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. To plant trees correctly, get a copy of the U of M publication called “Planting Trees and Shrubs in Minnesota,” which can be found on the U of M Extension Website: http://z.umn. edu/98n or by calling most U of M Extension offices. The publication also has choices for proper Minnesota tree species. Watering is going to be important to a newly planted tree as well as any existing trees on your landscape. Since watering is such a time-consuming task, you may have to pick and choose the existing trees that you want to water. I recommend watering any newly planted trees and also water any trees that have shown stress, disease or insect problems through the growing season. The dry conditions in latesummer and fall in 2012 are going to be very problematic for trees in 2012. Be sure to get out and water trees until the ground freezes.
ST. PAUL – Minnesota employers are cautiously optimistic about the state’s economic future, but are not confident the state has fully emerged from the four-year national recession. These findings highlighted the ninth-annual Minnesota Business Barometer Survey, co-sponsored by the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and Himle Rapp and Company, a public affairs firm headquartered in Minneapolis. The Minnesota Chamber is the state’s largest business advocacy organization representing 2,400 companies of all types and sizes across the state. In nearly all areas of the survey, the opinions of the general business community aligned with those of Minnesota Chamber members. This year, questions concerning the economy continued to provide mixed results. For the first time in several years, the survey showed that optimism is slowly returning among businesses. Thirty-one percent said the economy is getting better, compared with 13 percent a year ago. However, only 21 percent of the respondents reported profits were better than a year ago, while 25 percent reported lower profits than in the previous year. In addition, an equal number of employers reported reducing their number of employees as reported an increase. As the Business Barometer has found in other years, 84 percent of business owners and managers stated they were very or somewhat optimistic about Minnesota’s economic future over the next 10 years. “While business owners have a positive long-term outlook, the survey identifies real barriers to job creation,” Min-

Water newly planted and existing trees over the root zone of the tree. Roots of trees can vary from 1-1/2 to 3 times as wide as the canopy. Avoid frequent light watering and instead water infrequently and heavily. You will want to wet the soil to a 6- to 8-inch depth and then let the soil dry out in between. Use a rod to determine when you have wetted the soil to that depth. Believe it or not, you can overwater trees, which will starve the roots of oxygen and cause roots to rot. If fall rains are averaging one inch every week, watering will probably not be necessary. Generally, you want to have an adequate amount of moisture before the ground freezes up in late fall, especially with coniferous trees. My Minnesota Woods website has additional information on seasonal watering of trees and shrubs: http://z.umn .edu/98m. Protect stems of landscape and shrub trees from animals and mechanical equipment. This is most important on new or young shrubs and trees. Use a mesh or hardwire cloth at least three inches from the stem. Plastic guards can also be used, but they are only recommended to encase the lower part of the stem, where damage can take place. Sun scald can be prevented by wrapping the trunk with a commercial tree wrap, plastic tree guards, or any other light-colored material. Put the wrap on in the fall and re-
move it in the spring after the last frost. Wraps should be used primarily on new trees. Fertilizing trees should be done on a case-by-case basis. A soil test can be done to determine if the soil does not have the adequate amounts of fertilizer in the soil. University of Minnesota Soil Test Kits can be picked up at most University of Minnesota Extension offices. Often, the tree has sufficient amounts of nutrients available if the lawn is being fertilized regularly. If fertilizer is needed, a late fall application can be done before the ground freezes for coniferous trees and an application can be applied to deciduous trees between when it is fully leafed out and when it will start showing fall color change. Pruning also can be done this time of year on many trees. Late fall brings the time when it is safe to prune oaks and elms until next spring. During the dormant season serious disease problems are less problematic. Hold off on apple trees until the best window for preventing disease spread, which is late winter (late-February to early-March). Another helpful publication is the University of Minnesota publication “Pruning Trees and Shrubs,” located on the University of Minnesota Extension website, or by calling most University of Minnesota Extension offices. This publication is a good how-to guideline for pruning trees.

Sumter township Roadside Cutting Notices Persons owning or occupying real estate adjoining a Sumter Township road are required to cut all weeds and grass growing in the township road ditches adjacent to their property by October 15, 2012. Ditches need to be cut as to prevent snow from piling on township roads. This also refers to trees, rocks, brush and the like on road right-of-way. Do not place cut weeds and grass on the road surfaces as this causes problems when grading roads. Toro donates mower
The Bloomington-based Toro Company donated a 2012 Toro 60-inch, zero-turn commercial lawn mower to the High Island Lake Conservation Club in New Auburn. Above, Wayne Schultz, president of the lake club, puts the mower through its paces. The Toro Company donates products and money to non-profit 501(c)3 organizations once a year, and it is a world-wide application process. Barb Schutte has been a Toro employee since 1986 and is the secretary and treasurer of the lake club. Schutte applied for the donation never thinking Toro would even consider a small club in a small town would receive such a generous donation. For the past five years, several members of the lake club used their personal lawn mowers to maintain the property at the lake building. “Thank you for your volunteer hours to the club,” Schutte said. “It would take five hours to mow with our personnel lawn tractors, and today Wayne told me he can complete it in three hours with the zero turn. The High Island Lake Conservation Club would like to publicly thank the Toro company for its continued support of volunteerism and generosity.”
