Win them both, and GSL appears almost certain to claim the second seed, a first-round bye and home field for one of the Oct. 27 semifinals in the Section 2 tournament. “We’ve got a lot to play for,” Tschimperle said. *** Strong and biting north winds might have had some effect on Becker’s trademark passing game, but they did not bother the Panthers, who were determined to celebrate their homecoming with a big triumph.

Two-way end Reed Dunbar, one of the Panthers’ three senior captains and the player who scored GSL’s goahead touchdown against Becker, felt good after the victory, too. “I think it says we’re becoming a real good football team,” he said. Each team now sports a 5-1 record. GSL, Becker once clashed often in classics
Prior to last Friday’s 21-9 GSL victory over Becker, the Panthers and Bulldogs had not clashed on a football field since the 2006 Class AAA Prep Bowl. From 1999, though, when Becker joined the Wright County Conference for a brief stay, through that 2006 Prep Bowl, Dave Dose’s Glencoe-Silver Lake teams and Dwight Lundeen’s Bulldogs met in a series of classic games. Three times in a four-year span (2002-05), the programs met in the state semifinals of the Class AAA state tournament. In 2002, GSL’s Derek Dittmer’s late field goal gave the Panthers a 97 win. On its way to the state championship, the 2003 GSL team edged Becker 10-6 in one of the semifinals. 2005 was Becker’s year to win it all, including a 21-3 win over GSL in a state semifinal. The only time the two powers met in the Prep Bowl, though, was 2006. The date was Nov. 24. Each team arrived at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome that day with a gaudy 12-1 record. For starters, Becker ran out to a 14-0 lead, But the second quarter went to GSL, 19-0. The comeback started with Jon Hoese’s spectacular TD catch of Matt Muenchow’s 4th-and-8 pass. After Hoese tacked on a 13-yard scoring run, linebacker Chip Maresh intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown — that score coming on the last play of the first half. GSL led 19-14, It was 25-20 after three quarters; then kicker Keenan Dummer booted a field goal to spark a 17-0 fourth quarter. Final score was 42-20. Statistically, GSL rushed 48 times that day for 271 stripes (5.6 ypc) and completed seven of eight passes for another 70 yards. Fullback Bud Sanken rushed for 98 yards, Dusty Jurek for 86, Muenchow for 43 and Hoese for 42. Now, the teams have met again — as Class AAAA heavyweights. With its win, GSL leads the all-time series, 8 wins to 3. *** This year’s GSL team is one of six teams in Section 2 of Class AAAA. Hutchinson, 6-0 overall and a 3513 victor over GSL on Sept. 7, has the top QRF (seeding points), with 96.0. GSL (79.5) is next, followed by undefeated Marshall (60.0). Next are 2-4 Dassel-Cokato (35.5), 1-5 New Ulm (15.3), and 0-6 Mankato East (13.7). The Section 2 tournament’s two quarterfinals-round games are Tuesday, Oct. 23.

By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor rior to their senior year, GSL’s tremendous trio of Krissy Garbers, Courtney Lemke and Clarissa Ober had never experienced the joy of defeating big-neighbor Hutchinson on a volleyball court. That changed last Tuesday (Oct. 2) evening, when the Panthers swept past the visiting Tigers in three stunning games: 25-17, 25-16, 29-27. So, seniors, how does it feel? “Awesome!” said Ober, after smacking down 21 kill hits (out of 42 attempts). “We didn’t get down on ourselves tonight,” the 6-1 middle-blocker added. “We just kept pushing.” “It feels insane,” said Garbers, who contributed 18 digs, nine service receives and seven kills. “This is one heck of a season we’re having.” “It feels like a really big accomplishment,” said setter Lemke, after charting 36 set assists and six kills — the last being a neatly placed redirect, instead of a set, at 28-27 in the third game. Coupled with a 3-0 win at Annandale on Oct. 4, the Panthers are 18-2 overall. They are 6-2 (third place) in the Wright County Conference – with two league matches (both at home) to play.
P
*** Without question, GSL’s victory over Hutchinson was a team performance. “... To defeat the Tigers in three (games), it was a huge win,” head coach “Murf” Schwirtz said. “All the girls were on the same page; their intensity and drive were a complete package.” “I think we played really together tonight,” said Stephanie Klockmann, a junior who served a match-best 17 attempts to go with 10 digs and nine kills. “It’s been a group effort,” Ober said. Leading 18-16 in the first game, GSL broke away with five consecutive points on Garbers’ serve. Two were the result of Hutch hitting errors, and another due to a passing error by the Tigers. The other two were a combination block by Garbers and sophomore Lexi Kerslake; and later, a redirect by Lemke. Game point was a kill by Klockmann. The Tigers jumped ahead 10-5 in the second go-round, but never bunched points the remainder of the game. GSL caught them at 12-12, before tallying three in a row on ninthgrader Madison Kalenberg’s serve — for a 17-13 advantage. Lemke collected 13 of her assists
and Ober eight of her kills in the second game. However, it was a kill hit out of a corner by Garbers that closed out the game. The third game started with Hutchinson scoring six points in a row, GSL tallying the next seven, and Hutch eight of the next nine. The Tigers led 14-8. Refusing to be discouraged, GSL gradually chipped into its deficit; finally pulling even (at 19-19) and pushing ahead (22-19) during a run of five tallies off another round of Kalenberg serving. But Hutch answered with four in a row for a 23-22 lead. Back-and-forth the teams went; GSL serving for the match but not getting it at 24-23 and later at 25-24; Hutch serving for the game at 26-25 but getting a service error; then GSL coming up empty again at 27-26. Finally, following another Tigers service error, Garbers served at 2827 and Lemke provided her redirect finish. “Even when we were down 6-0, 14-8, 18-14,” Schwirtz said, “... to bounce back against a great team says something about our girls’composure and focus.”

Ober is looking for more big wins. “We’ll play better,” she said. “This is only our best so far.” *** By the numbers, GSL showed a 48.35 attack percentage (44-for-91). Lemke (6 of 10), Garbers (7 of 13), Ober (21 of 42) and Klockmann (9 of 18) each had 50.00 percent attack totals or better. While service errors cost Hutchinson dearly, the Panthers only had two for the match. *** — Game scores at Annandale were 25-15, 25-14 and 25-19. GSL attacked 96 times and tallied 46 kills for a 47.92 attack percentage. Ober (21 of 36) led the way with a 58.33 percentage. Garbers was 10for-20 and Lemke 9-for-16. Lemke also had 34 set assists, 14 digs and one service ace. Garbers had 16 digs, Klockmann 14 and freshman Cortney Konen eight. GSL charted three service errors. The 100 percenters included Kerslake (14-for-14), Kalenberg (13-for-13) and Klockmann (12-for-12),

GSL tops MACCRAY, falls to Providence in Section 5(A)
The Glencoe-Silver Lake tennis team won its first match in the Section 5 (Class A) team tournament last Wednesday at home, downing MACCRAY, 5-2. However, the second-seeded Panthers lost their semifinal by a 7-0 score to No. 3 Providence Academy — a team GSL had edged 4-3 back on Aug. 23. Providence advanced to the championship match (and a state qualifier) to top-seeded Annandale; the Cardinals winning, 4-3. Both semifinals and the championship match were played Monday, Oct. 8, at St. John’s University in Collegeville. The Section 5(A) individual tournament is Oct. 11 and Oct. 15, also at St. John’s.

Not much happened on the scoreboard during a 0-0 first half, however; and then the Bulldogs started the second half by driving 80 yards for what would be their lone touchdown. With the game’s next possession, GSL gained 81⁄2 yards in three plays, prompting the coaches to send out their punting unit. Instead of sending the ball all the way to punter Ryan Kuester, though, the Panther snapper zipped it short to fullback Dalton Clouse, one of the blocking backs. Clouse powered for a 2 1⁄2yard gain, enough to move the chains. On the next play, Anderson ran right on a keeper, picked up two dandy down-field blocks from Kuester and end Tanner Grack and dashed all the way to the Becker end zone, completing a 53-yard scoring play. Tschimperle said it was Kuester who called for the fake punt. “He’s lucky it worked out,” the coach said, noting how Becker brought 10 players to the line of scrimmage, but still could not stop Clouse. On Anderson’s touchdown sprint, Tschimperle said Kuester “decleated” a Bulldog defender with a block that sealed off the inside and Grack took care of the outside, creating a massive running lane. Two huge plays and the score was tied, 7-7, “I thought the whole momentum of the game shifted,” Tschimperle said. About Kuester ’s call, he said: “Sometimes, you need that one guy to say it” — to say what others are thinking, too. A couple of minutes later, linebacker Brandon Ebert made another big play by getting a piece of Brett Watercott’s punt into the wind; a 7yarder that set up GSL’s offense at its own 47. Now, the offensive line was really firing off the ball, paving the way for a series of gains by halfback Jake Stuedemann. Then, facing a third-down snap at the Becker 11, Anderson said he showed “sweep” with a play-action fake, spotted Dunbar between Becker’s safeties and threw a pass Dunbar hauled down — landing on the goalline. Touchdown! Dunbar, noting how he got a “free release” off the snap, said he knew he had enough for a first down; so he “dove” for the touchdown. Anderson praised his offensive line for giving him time to observe Becker’s strong safety biting on the fake. Wait! There is more. After GSL stoppers sacked Becker ’s next possession, leading to another short punt, the Panthers marched 40 yards in 12 plays to paydirt — the last three being quarterback sneaks. When GSL coaches saw “the push” ahead of the first sneak, they called for two more, Tschimperle said. The last one gave the Panthers a 21-7 lead with 4:12 remaining. “Our offensive line had a big second half,” Anderson said about Michael Skoglund, Nolan Lepel, Zach Jones, Eric Thalmann, Nick Rose and ends Derek Bratsch, Grack and Dunbar. *** — Defensively, Tschimperle said GSL concentrated five Panthers — SAM linebacker Zach Dahlke and four linemen — on stopping Becker’s rushing game. That freed coaches to loosen their other linebackers and play some bump-andrun coverage on Bulldog receivers. “We tried to disrupt their timing,” he said. Eight of Becker’s 54 plays from scrimmage lost yardage. On the other had, the Bulldogs’ long gainer for the evening was a 19-yard pass. — Becker played two linemen, one linebacker and a safety both ways, according to Tschimperle. He said coaches pointed that out to the Panther players at halftime. — GSL’s health report, provided by Tschimperle Sunday evening, is a good one. Not only did the Panthers get out of a hard-hitting battle against Becker without adding anyone to the injury list, one name may come off the list this week. Keenan Mehlos, a senior WILL linebacker, was expected to return to practices Monday and, depending how things go, return to game action at Waconia. Mehlos injured a shoulder in the Annandale game of Sept. 14 and has not played since.

Guidelines for applying nitrogen
By David Nicolai, Extension educator As the corn and soybean and harvest seasons begin to wrap up in Minnesota, many producers’ plans are turning next to the 2013 crop. One area of discussion which will be evaluated is the application of nitrogen for the 2013 corn crop. Soil temperatures are still averaging above 60 degrees as of Oct 1, but will trend downward in October with the arrival of cooler air temperatures later in October. The University of Minnesota Lamberton Outreach Center’s website at http:// swroc.cfans.umn.edu/Weath erInformation/index.htm lists daily soil temperatures at three depths in the soil. In addition the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s website at https://www.mda. state.mn.us/en/protecting/soil protection/soiltemp.aspx contains an interactive map which lists the six-inch soil temperature at varying locations across Minnesota. This is good information to help producers make nitrogen application decisions as listed below. Dr. John Lamb, University of Minnesota Extension soils specialist, provides the following guidelines for nitrogen applications in central and western Minnesota: Nitrogen (N) is a mobile nutrient and, therefore, must be managed differently to get the most nutrient value and the least amount of loss to the environment. In the south-central part of Minnesota, application of fall N is not always the most efficient management option. If your operation requires you to apply some N in the fall, there are some things you can do to get the most N out of the fertilizer application. First, do not apply nitrogen fertilizer before the soil temperature at the six-inch depth is consistently below 50 degrees. Second, use only an ammonium form of nitrogen. Anhydrous ammonia would be the preferred followed by urea. If you have a field that is consistently wet, you may want to consider the use of a nitrification inhibitor to slow the conversion of ammonium to nitrate. The use of the inhibitor is not a way to allow for application before the soil temperatures are below 50 degrees. If you farm sandy ground, N applied in the fall will not be in the soil when spring arrives. Fall N application on sandy soil, irrigated or not, is a total waste of time and money and presents large risks of groundwater pollution. In the southwest, west-central, and northwestern parts of Minnesota, fall applications of ammonia-based N sources is OK if the soil temperature is less than 50 degrees. At the time of writing this, Minnesota agricultural areas were experiencing drought at one degree or another. The ground is hard — maybe harder than last year. With this in mind, a late fall application of N after we receive some rain maybe the best fall option. It will reduce the chances of loss by getting a better soil cover of the ammonia band and also save on the wear and tear of the tillage and application equipment. If you use urea, it must be incorporated to keep it from volatilizing. Dry soils are good candidates of urea volatilization to occur. Research with fall N applications, has shown that anhydrous ammonia will have a lower loss of nitrogen than urea. Also with the dry summer, it is strongly suggested that you take a soil nitrate-N test. This is particularly true if the 2012 crop was corn. With the dry summer, the crop may not have used all of the N fertilizer applied for the previous crop and left a large amount of residual nitrate-N that could be used by the 2013 crop. To be useful, a soil sample for nitrate should be taken to a depth of two feet for corn and four feet for sugar beet. The sample should be taken after the soil temperature is below 50 degrees. A soil sample taken before the soil temperatures are below 50 degrees is a waste of money and time. The nitrate-N soil test value will be erroneous. If the weather conditions continue dry into winter, one should strongly consider spring application. Spring applications result in less chance of N loss and you will also have a better idea of the crop potential in 2013. A spring pre-plant soil nitrate-N test will also be helpful, similar to the fall soil test described earlier in this article. ***** Upcoming educational events: • “What is a Fair and Profitable Farmland Rental Agreement?” McLeod County fairgrounds commercial building, at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 14. • 2013 Crop Management Input seminar, Hutchinson Event Center, Tuesday, Dec. 4.
Harvests ahead of schedule
The Sept. 24 Minnesota Ag News – Crop Weather that was released by the United States Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service, indicates that Minnesota’s corn and soybean harvest is ahead of average. You can find the most current report at http://www.nass.usda.gov. The report from Sept. 24 indicates that the amount of corn harvested in Minnesota was at 30 percent compared to the five-year average of 2 percent. The amount of soybeans harvested was at 45 percent compared to the five-year average of 5 percent. These average numbers may be higher or lower depending on the local conditions. Many reports indicate better-than-expected crops in the region. Those interested in applying fall nitrogen should be assessing the soil temperatures before considering application. Soil temperatures at the four-inch depth from Sept. 17-24 indicated an average of 61° at Lamberton, 63° at St. Paul, and 62° at Waseca. Soil temperatures cycle up and down as a reflection of the air temperature, and as a result, local soil temperatures are still fluctuating. ***** Many people utilize the spring, summer and fall to grow their treasured houseplants outdoors. Houseplants that have been growing outside should be moved back indoors. Be sure to wash the plants well on both tops and undersides of the leaves. Check for tiny white specks, sticky leaves or webbing that could

signal a spider mite infestation. Also watch for bits of white on leaf undersides that would be shed skins of aphids or white flies Keep returning houseplants isolated until you determine they are not infected with insect pests. It is very important to take care of newly planted plants to ensure a positive spring. Watering new trees and shrubs for the first five years is important to help establish their root systems. It is equally important to water trees and shrubs that have shown stress during the growing season. The soil should be damp six inches below the soil surface. As important as watering is for plants, many times we tend to overwater our new plantings. If the soil is damp six inches below the soil surface, leave the plant alone. An inch of rain every 10 to 14 days can go a long way to providing the needed amount of water for established plants as well as new plantings. In recent weeks we have not seen any rain, and water is needed. Watering new trees and shrubs along with stressed plants is important until the soil freezes up in the fall. Leaves are starting to drop off area trees. There are many
common foliar diseases that continue their life cycle from year to year. A couple of those diseases are anthracnose and apple scab. Anthracnose is typically found on ash, maple and oak trees this spring. Apple scab also tends to be a perennial problem on apple trees throughout the summer. Leaves that had foliar diseases such as anthracnose, apple scab, should be disposed of rather than composted. Typically, compost piles do not heat enough to kill disease organisms. It is all right to mulch nondiseased leaves back into your lawn. Leaves mulch up much better when dry compared to wet. It may take a couple of times with the lawn mower to get an adequate consistency. Be sure not to leave clumps or piles on the lawn surface because it may lead to smothering out the lawn or create disease problems in the spring. Compost excess leaves or collect and dispose through your municipality collections. ***** Upcoming educational events: • 2013 crop management input seminar at the Hutchinson Event Center, Tuesday, Dec. 4.

Sumter township Roadside Cutting Notices Persons owning or occupying real estate adjoining a Sumter Township road are required to cut all weeds and grass growing in the township road ditches adjacent to their property by October 15, 2012. Ditches need to be cut as to prevent snow from piling on township roads. This also refers to trees, rocks, brush and the like on road right-of-way. Do not place cut weeds and grass on the road surfaces as this causes problems when grading roads. Please take note that without further notice or notification, non-compliance will be corrected by the township and expenses incurred will be charged to the landowners by order of the Sumter Township Board of Supervisors.
