By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor John Thell pitched a three-hitter, and Josh Kraby had two hits and two RBIs, as the Glencoe Brewers closed their regular-season schedule with a 51 victory at Watertown last Sunday afternoon. The win earned Glencoe (8-12 league, 9-15 overall) the CRVL North Division’s fourth seed, which means home field should this week’s Region 7(C) qualifier series with New Germany (7-13) require a decisive third game Sunday afternoon (July 29).

Plato Legion team meets Jordan next in Third District tournament
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor aime Paumen, Adam Prehn and Ethan Maass each notched a complete-game victory, and Plato batters rapped out 35 hits in 21 innings, as the American Legion Post 641 baseball team marched smartly through the first three days of the Third District (Division II) tournament, July 20, 21 and 22. Plato, the third seed out of League E, improved to 11-4 overall by downing Pine Island 9-0 last Friday; League A top seed and tourney host LeSueur-Henderson 11-5 the following day, and Watertown 9-1 on Sunday. As a result, Post 641 advances to Friday’s (July 27) fourth round of the 16-team, double-elimination event. Jordan, the only other team yet to take a loss, supplies the opposition for a 7:30 p.m. showdown in LeSueur. The winner plays again at 2 p.m. Saturday, while the loser goes at 4:15 p.m. First pitch of the championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, with a second game, if necessary, following. All remaining games are being played in LeSueur. The champion advances to the Division II state tournament, which is being played in Sacred Heart this year. Plato head coach Dean Schwirtz said he was “proud” of his boys for the brand of baseball they played throughout the first weekend of districts. “The kids accepted their roles,” Schwirtz said, claiming his players’ lone concern was doing what’s best for the team. A look back at Plato’s three wins:

In 2nd year, Hoese gets a full off-season with Packers
The Green Bay Packers open training camp tomorrow morning (July 26), and among those looking for a varsity job is Glencoe-Silver Lake High School graduate Jon Hoese (class of 2007). The venue is not foreign to Hoese. As an undrafted rookie free agent, he signed on Green Bay’s practice squad just prior to last summer’s training camp; then took part in each of the Packers’ four pre-season games, before being released Sept. 2 — six days ahead of the regular-season opener with New Orleans. Hoese returned to Glencoe, where he kept himself in shape while wondering if a National Football League team would show interest. Eventually, one did, and again it was Green Bay, which was short a running back. On Dec. 15, Hoese signed a new practice-squad contract. He continued on the practice squad for the remainder of the season. Then he began preparing for a full schedule of off-season workouts; something rookies like Hoese did not get in 2011 because of the the owners’ lockout. Hoese remembers being handed a playbook after signing on last year; then essentially being forced to do the best he could. This spring, he said, coaches showed more patience, allowing Hoese time to learn Packer techniques. As a result, he feels he now has a better understanding of Green Bay’s offense, as well as with Packer special teams. Mini-camp and the spring’s other team activities have been “very beneficial,” he said. “I felt pretty good throughout” the spring, Hoese added. *** Hoese is weighing in at 245 pounds, which is seven or eight pounds more than this time a year ago. He said he lost 5-10 pounds in the 2011 pre-season, and expects to level off around 240. “I’m in good shape,” Hoese said. At last check, Hoese is the second fullback on Green Bay’s depth chart, behind Pro-Bowler John Kuhn, a savvy veteran who recently inked a new deal with the Packers. Hoese, who walked on the University of Minnesota team as a freshman and became a Gophers captain in his senior year, remains a versatile fullback; indeed, with a style not unlike Kuhn’s. “I like the (Green Bay) offense,” he said. Stay tuned!

walk. Never before, he said, had he struck out 15 batters in a seven-inning game. “His breaking pitches (curve and slider) were working really well,” said catcher Reed Dunbar, who thought Paumen’s fastball had good “gas,” too. Schwirtz noted how well Paumen changed speeds and located pitches. To start the morning game, Pine Island starter Colton Sinning hurled two 1-2-3 innings of his own. However, Parker Kerslake opened the third with a long double to right-center and later scored on Teddy Peterson’s two-out single past the Pine Island third baseman. Then in the fourth, Prehn ignited a three-run rally with his first two-bagger. Derek Bratsch knocked in one run with a single, and Derek Weber brought home another with a sacrifice fly. Dunbar and Kerslake had RBI hits off Pine Island’s bullpen in the fifth, and Prehn belted his homer – a screaming liner – to cap a three-run sixth.

Trailing 2-1, Plato erupted for five runs in the top of the third; two scoring on a double by Dunbar, and two more on a double by Weber. LeSueur-Henderson cut its deficit to two runs on two occasions (6-4 and 75), but Post 641 tallied a run in the sixth, then three more — on RBI hits by Nolan Lepel, Dunbar and Derek Bratsch — in the seventh. Crow River Valley League Standings
(End of Regular Season)
Irish beat Bruins for top spot
5-2 win gives Green Isle No. 1 seed in CRVL South
By Lori Copler Staff Writer The Brownton Bruins will open a Crow River Valley League South Division playoffs series tonight against Cologne in Norwood at 7:30 p.m. Green Isle topped Brownton 5-2 Sunday afternoon to capture the South’s top seed, and the Irish will take on Norwood for another berth in the Region 7(C) tournament. The Bruins, who finished the regular season 16-5 in the CRVL and 20-14 overall, beat the Cologne Hollanders twice in the regular season, 11-4 on June 30 and 5-4 on July 15. But Bruins’ skipper Doug Schuette is not taking the Hollanders lightly. “Cologne is a much better team than what their 7-14 CRVL record indicates,” said Schuette. “In our first game with them, we had a two-run lead before scoring five runs in the top of the ninth. In the second game, it took us 15 innings to get the win.” The Bruins will need to play solid baseball all the way around to capture the best two-of-three game series, Schuette indicated. “In order to win the series, we’ll need quality at-bats, good pitching, and make plays in the field,” he said. “We need to get runners on base The Bruins finally got on the scoreboard on Chad Genz’s solo home run shot in the eighth with one out, and then scored another in the ninth when Matt Schwichtenberg plated Brad Daak with a single. Alex Twenge earned the win for Green Isle. Pitching into the ninth inning, he gave up two runs on seven hits, fanned 12 Brownton batters and walked none. Zachow closed the game in the ninth, recording all three outs — one on a groundout and two on strikeouts. Daak had two singles for Brownton, while Jason Rosenau, Schwichtenberg, Taylor Schuette, Genz and Glaeser each had one. Josh Wendlandt took the loss for Brownton, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits. He walked two in 51⁄3 innings. Joe Ahlers threw 22⁄3 innings of relief, giving up three hits. — The Bruins had five defensive errors, but also had some nice defensive plays, including a rare triple play in the bottom of the eighth. In that frame, the Irish’s Jackson Hallahan and Zach Herd had back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with no outs. Lucas Herd then hit a sizzler toward Brownton shortstop Ryan Grams, who gloved it, flipped it to second baseman Taylor Schuette to pick off Hallahan before he could tag up, and then Schuette fired to first baseman Schwichtenberg, who tagged out Zach Herd as he headed back to the bag. The Bruins also turned a 46-3 double play in the sixth.

Following is a closer look at the Brewers and Blue Jays: hurled six innings of shutout relief and also contributed a two-run single to a 7-1 Dutchmen victory. Catcher Dan Fabhaugen added a two-run double, Peter Kroells a solo home run and MJ Iverson two hits and an RBI. Wawrzyniak listed Stephen Wiblemo (3-3, 3.86 ERA) as his probable starter in Game 1, with Thell (1-3, 2.68) going Friday evening. He said Thell “threw an amazing game” at Watertown, where he allowed only two base runners after the third inning. Wawrzyniak said he likes the depth of his pitching staff in a three-game series with New Germany. At the same time, he respects the Dutchmen veterans. “They love a challenge,” he said. Glencoe’s top hitters (25 or more at-bats) belong to catcher Kraby (.294 BA, .412 OBP, 12 SB, 20 R); Wiblemo (3 HR, 18 RBI); Ryan Style (.289 BA); shortstop Jorrin Pautz (.281 BA, 11 RBI), and Paumen (.280 BA). Glencoe’s team batting average is .240. No injuries. “We are very healthy,” Wawrzyniak reported.

The teams met early in the regular season; Plato winning 6-1 at Carver on May 12 and again 6-3 at Glencoe on May 16. “They’re a totally different team now,” Jays skipper Adam Dammann said about the Black Sox. Plato did not have its full roster on the field in early May, either. Leading hitter Matt Odegaard (.432 BA) still was helping Minnesota StateMankato get to the College World Series; ace pitcher Tony Wischnack (3-1, 1.47 ERA) still had not thrown his first pitch of the summer; budding star Adam Prehn (.333 BA) still was playing high school ball at GSL. Still, there is a sense of uncertainty about facing Carver, which beat Green Isle, Brownton and Young America during an 8-1 stretch from May 19 through June 17. Dammann planned to start Wischnack in Game 1 and bring him back for Sunday’s game, if needed. He listed “Boomer” Graupmann as his probable starter for Game 2 on Thursday.
