The football is loose in the Hutchinson end zone, and the Tigers’ Evan Metag (35) is preparing to pounce on it. The lost fumble killed a 67-
yard GSL march, and allowed Hutch to hang on to a 7-0 lead. The Tigers eventually won, 28-7.
Tigers add 2nd blemish to GSL’s 8-2 football season
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor izing up his team’s chances for springing an upset on top seed Hutchinson before last Friday’s Section 2 (Class AAAA) championship game, GSL football coach Scott Tschimperle pointed to three keys. One, Glencoe-Silver Lake needed to prevent Hutchinson from making big plays. Two, the Panthers had to net a plus tally in the battle for turnovers. Three, Tschimperle’s boys needed to tackle well. Instead, Hutch quarterback McKinley Anderson threw an 81yard touchdown pass to Mitch Petersen in the first quarter and ran 73 yards himself for a second-quarter TD; Hutchinson jumped on one GSL fumble and picked off two Panther passes, while committing nary a turnover itself; and GSL, as a team, did not have one of its better tackling performances. “We went oh-for-three,” Tschimperle said. The resulting 28-7 Hutch win vaults the 10-0 Tigers into a state quarterfinal with Kasson-Mantorville this Friday in Chanhassen. It also ended 8-2 GSL’s season; each of its losses coming to Hutchinson by a three-touchdown margin. “We knew we had to play our best game,” Tschimperle said. “We just didn’t get it done.”

By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor A “remarkable” 2012 GSL volleyball “team” saw its season end in a decisive fifth game of its North Subsection 2 (Class AA) semifinal last Tuesday, Oct. 30, in New Prague. Battling fellow Wright County Conference member Mound-Westonka, a team GSL outlasted in five games back on Sept. 11, the Panthers lost the go-the-distance rematch; the Hawks winning 2513, 25-27, 21-25, 25-20, 15-11. “Mound is a truly united team,” GSL head coach “Murf” Schwirtz said. “They play as one and understand each other’s role.” Schwirtz easily could have been talking about her own team, which blended together to win 25 out of 29 matches this fall. Ask Schwirtz what will first come to her mind 10 years from now when mention of the 2012 Panthers is made, she said she will picture a “remarkable team” — indeed, a tight group consisting of three senior captains, two juniors, a sophomore and three ninth-graders. Each senior had a strong career-closing match. Clarissa Ober, a 6-1 middle-hitter, was charted for 34 kills (47.89 attack percentage) and 8 solo blocks. Schwirtz calls her a gifted athlete who uses her talents to the best of her ability. “A tenacious threat at the net, ... ‘The Beast’ is fun to watch perform,” Schwirtz said, “and (she) does what you ask of her with a 100-percent work (ethic).” Courtney Lemke, the setter, came through with 52 set assists in her final match. Schwirtz says she is a gym rat with cat-like reflexes. “It is easy to coach someone

with the level of passion she has for the game,” Schwirtz said. “... (She) leads by example, and never gives up.” Krissy Garbers, an undersized outside hitter, contributed 9 kills, 9 of 10 serves, 25 digs and 11 service receives to her final match. Schwirtz calls her an intense spitfire; a player who does not care if she has to face a 6-foot opponent. “She’s a gamer at heart, and fears no one,” Schwirtz said. Among the girls expected to return next fall is versatile 5-11 middle-hitter Steph Klockmann, who closed her junior season with a big performance at New Prague. “Klockmann had an all-around amazing match,” Schwirtz said. “She not only was tough at net blocking back-row attacks, but she had some key (13) digs and chalked up 10 kills.” Klockmann also was GSL’s serve leader, launching 19 attempts without an error. Girls’ soccer improves, but stay patient!
There is good news and bad news concerning the GSL girls’ soccer program. The good news is Zach Otto-Fisher plans to return as head coach in 2013. Plus, JV coach Gary Carter and junior high coach Debbie Moosbrugger have told OttoFisheer they plan to be back, too. This is a big deal. Otto-Fisher & Co. are working hard to establish a winning program, which requires their continuity from the top. GSL only won three varsity matches in 2012, but goals for were up 7 from the previous autumn,

while goals against decreased by 8. Meanwhile, numbers of girls out for soccer currently are 41 (grades 7-12), an increase of 18 from May 2012. Indeed, Panther teams played full varsity and JV schedules in 2012, plus five junior high matches. So, significant improvements are happening. Now the bad news: GSL is graduating five four-year players among seven seniors in all from this year’s team. Încluded in the losses are AllWright County Conference attacker

Katey Cohrs and honorable-mention recipient Mercy Rakow, a midfielder. Wait, there is more. Two skilled eighth-graders are headed to Mayer Lutheran next year, to play for the Crusaders. All told, 17 of the 19 goals GSL’s varsity scored in 2012 are being lost to graduation and transfer. And while 7-12 numbers are encouraging, the numbers for next year’s top two classes are very low. Otto-Fisher expects to return two current juniors and two current sophomores — among them AllWCC honorable mentions Yodee Rivera and Yocelin Lopez. “We’re going to be young,” OttoFisher says. In other words, it’s going to take more time; indeed, more summer soccer, more growth, more patience, just more. But Otto-Fisher says he’s here for the long haul, and he’s not interested in short cuts. “We’re doing things the right way,” he says.

Burr earns all-state spot
GSL junior places 17th at Class A meet
By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor ori Burr made her third trip to the Class A state cross country meet her best yet. The Glencoe-Silver Lake junior, running with 174 other elite runners on a cloudy, calm Saturday morning in the 40s at St. Olaf College in Northfield, ran the 4,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 16.33 seconds. That placed 17th overall, making Burr a member of her division’s 25-girl all-state team. “She didn’t seem nervous at

all,” GSL head coach Jeff Delwiche said, noting how calm Burr ran after establishing good position with a “great start.” Burr, who ran the state course first as an eighth-grader, returned last year, when she placed 32nd in15:38.3. How did she manage to lop off 22 seconds in a year? For one thing, Delwiche described the state course as “rock hard” and “very fast.” Second, weather conditions were ideal for distance runners. Third, Burr had those two previous state experiences.
“Tori was totally prepared; totally ready,” he said. Jalen Metcalf, a second GSL state qualifier, placed 89th (out of 175) in the boys’ race. A senior running in his first state meet, Metcalf posted a time of 17:20.1 for his division’s 5,000-meter test. GSL’s steady lead runner throughout the season, Metcalf “seemed happy” with his state experience, according to Delwiche. *** — Section 4 champion Clare Flanagan, a Blake School jun-
ior, was the girls’ individual winner for the second straight year. Last year, her time was 14:21.7; this year, it is 14:04.1. — Litchfield junior Savannah Ramirez, the individual champion at this year’s Caty Delwiche Invitational (annually run at GSL), placed seventh at state (14:47.3), while Annandale junior Courtney Alama claimed the 13th spot (15:06.8). — Proctor senior Matt Welch took home the boys crown with his first-place clocking of 15:34.9.
Tori Burr — The Class A team titles went to Esko’s girls and Perham’s boys.

Tschimperle gave a lot of credit to Hutchinson, noting how well the Tigers got their GSL opponents blocked. “I expect them to win it all,” Tschimperle said. *** The first time Hutch and GSL met, back on Sept. 7, the Tigers scored the first three times they owned the ball. While both the first and third possessions were grinding marches, the middle one required a big play. McKinley Anderson produced that, completing a 22-yard pass out of punt formation. At halftime, the score was: Hutchinson 21, GSL 0. In last Friday’s rematch, Hutch marched 71 yards with the opening possession, scoring after 11 consecutive rushing plays. GSL answered with a 67yard march of its own; the Panthers advancing to a spot inside the Hutch 2 in seven straight rushing plays. But then, the Tigers produced two big plays in three snaps. First, GSL fumbled into the end zone on 1st-and-goal, and the Tigers’ Evan Metag recovered for a touchback. Then on second down, Anderson hit speedster Mitch Petersen in stride for an 81-yard TD pass. About six minutes later, Anderson broke loose for a 73-yard TD run. By halftime, the score was: Hutchinson 21, GSL 0. On the long pass, Tschimperle said GSL super safety Ethan Maass (17 tackles) bit on a run-action fake, leaving “lightning-fast” Petersen only to deal with man coverage. Running a basic post route, Petersen stretched easily to collect a perfectly thrown ball from his QB. With each long-distance TD, Hutch showed GSL’s defense nothing new. “We just didn’t execute,” Tschimperle said. The first time the teams met, back on Sept. 7, GSL got the scoring started in the second half. Then the Panthers

GSL fullback Dalton Clouse (46) powers for some of the 140 rushing yards he gained against Hutchinson scored again, making it a onepossession game. But McKinley Anderson and Petersen hooked up on a 78-yard pass, which led to a Hutch touchdown. The Tigers, in the end, won 35-13. In last Friday’s rematch, GSL marched 69 yards with the opening possession of the second half, scoring on the 12th play to narrow its deficit to 21-7. Then, GSL’s defense chalked up a 3-and-out stop, resulting in a Hutch punt. From its 45, GSL’s offense took possession looking for more. Instead, the Panthers got a procedure penalty; then a 3yard run on first down, a pass incompletion on second down, and a pass interception on third down — the pick an over-the-shoulder grab after a deep drop by linebacker Jake Wendland. With the ball, Hutch marched 59 yards in nine straight rushing plays to re-establish superiority. Final score: Hutchinson 28, GSL 7. *** These 13 Panther seniors have played the final game in their high school careers: Reed Dunbar, Travis Rothstein, Derek Bratsch, Ryan Kuester, Ethan Maass, Brandon Ebert, Zach Dahlke, Austin Jackson, Mitch Rose, Eric Thalmann, Jeremy Tower, Michael Skoglund, and Ray Eberhard. Twelve of the 13 were starters. Three — Dunbar, Maass and Ebert — were three-year starters. “I’m really happy for our seniors,” Tschimperle said, noting the WCC West Division championship won by the 2012 Panthers, plus an undefeated record (5-0) at home. He also mentioned the come-from-behind victory over Annandale and an ability
in the Section 2 (Class AAAA) championship game.

Schwirtz hopes the 2012 season has a carry-over effect on next year’s team. “Success fuels success,” she said, pointing to this year’s ninth-graders as GSL volleyball’s next class with good numbers of talent. “Having these younger girls see what it takes to win at a higher level,” Schwirtz said, “should only make them want to fill big shoes” all the more. *** — On Sept. 11, GSL outscored Mound-Westonka 3-2 in games and 110-102 in points. Soldier’s diary of ‘Indian Troubles of 1862’ to be performed on Nov. 18
The McLeod County Historical Museum will present “Diary of the Soldier during the Indian Troubles of 1862,” performed by Larry Macht of Glencoe, Sunday, Nov. 18, at 3 p.m., at The Coffee Company, 903 Highway 15 S., Hutchinson. The ticket price also includes coffee and a choice of three kinds of pie by Grandma Vi’s Pies. “As we near the end of 2012 and our focus on the 150th anniversary of the Conflict of 1862, the museum has teamed up with The Coffee Company to bring you an afternoon of some sweet history,” said Lori Pickell-Stangel, museum executive director. Macht, a long-time interpretor at Murphy’s Landing, will play Thomas Scantlebury, who, along with a wagon load of boys, were on their way to Henderson to enlist to fight in the Civil War. “But little did Thomas know that in just a few days, war would come to him and the surrounding communities!” Pickell-Stangel said. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the museum, and there are a limited number of seats, Pickell-Sta ngel said.

County Board approves repair of Swan Lake tile
By Lori Copler Staff Writer The McLeod County Board of Commissioners’ regular meeting Tuesday morning lasted all of 30 minutes. Items in the brief agenda included: • A report from Parks Superintendent Al Koglin on collapsed tile and a washout at Swan Lake Park near Silver Lake. Koglin said a camera had scoped the tile from the lake intake to about 265 feet into a meadow, going under a county road. The camera found no further problems in that span, Koglin said. The County Board authorized Koglin to have the tile and washout, located near the public access, repaired. Koglin also said the camera surveyed about 200 feet of the far end of the tile, where it discharges into a ditch, and found about a foot and a half of sediment that Outpatient Youth Program

will eventually need to be cleaned out. • Approved spending $14,621 to make the civil defense sirens compliant with the federal narrow-band radio mandate. The work includes all sirens except that in Plato, which is a different brand. Emergency Services Director Kevin Mathews said it will cost about $1,200 to narrowband the Plato siren, but a final cost will be brought back to the County Board in the near future. Like the county’s emergency radio system, the civil service sirens must be narrow-band complaint by January 2013. • Agreed to buy a new laptop computer for the Winsted Police Department to replace a squad computer that “crashed.” Winsted will lease the computer from the county over a four-year period, with the lease payments to cover the cost of the computer.
