Panther baseball mired in a slump



Watertown-Mayer 6, GSL 5 (11 inn.)
Watertown – The GSL Panthers baseball team lost a marathon 11-inning game to the Watertown-Mayer Royals
The game was the first of a double-header on Thursday, May 9.
The Royals got on the board first when Michael Foley doubled to left-center field, scoring Landon Meyer from first base.
GSL took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Max Hansch singled to right field, driving in Luke Roepke and Braxton Streich.
Watertown-Mayer would get a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 2-2.
The game remained deadlocked until the top of the 10th inning when GSL broke the tie with three runs.
Braxton Streich scored on Evan Motzko’s double to center field.
Motzko and Max Hansch (BB) scored on Maverick Buckley’s double to left field, giving the Panthers a 5-2 lead.
Unfortunately, the Panthers could not hang on to the lead.
Jaren Vogt and Michael Foley scored on Noah Luethner’s single to right field.
Xavier Skillings picked up a key two-out hit to score Dominic Heitz, tying the game 5-5.
The Royals got the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning.
Noah Weinzierl led the inning off with a double to left field. Wienzierl came in to score on Jaren Vogt’s game-winning RBI single to left field.
Luke Roepke started for the Panthers, pitching 8.1 innings of two-run ball.
Braxton Streich took the tough loss for the Panthers.

Watertown-Mayer 14, GSL 8
Game two featured quite a bit more offense in half the innings game one had.
The Royals offense picked up where it left off in game one, jumping out to a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers responded in the bottom of the first inning, scoring five runs on five singles, using two walks, and two hit-by pitches to bat around in the inning, taking a 5-2 lead.
The Royals doubled down scoring five runs in the second inning, and five runs in the third inning to take a 12-5 lead.
Brody Ruschmeier scored on Luke Roepke’s double in the bottom of the third inning, and Jackson Wischnack scored on Max Hansch’s groundout in the fourth inning to cut the Royals lead to 12-7.
Watertown-Mayer would get those runs back in the top of the fifth and sixth innings and would go on to win 14-8.

NYA 3, GSL 0
Norwood Young America – The Panthers would travel to Norwood Young America just 24 hours after playing 17 marathon innings against Watertown-Mayer.
Raider pitching held the Panther offense scoreless, as the Panther bats scattered six hits.
Max Hansch pitched admirably, pitching all six innings, while saving an already taxed pitching staff from further wear.
Hansch held the Raiders to just three earned runs.
Brody Ruschmeier had collected three hits to lead the Panther offense.

Rockford 20, GSL 0 (5 inn.)
Glencoe – The Panthers would probably rather forget Monday afternoon’s game altogether. Most teams have a game like this every year, where you have to learn the lessons you can from it and just move on.
Down 2-0, GSL ran into big trouble in the third inning, giving up 14 runs in one of those half innings the Security Bank scoreboard could not wear.
Starting pitcher Jackson Wischnack induced the requisite out getting balls, but the defense behind him committed four errors, and the inning would go on.
With the win Rockford maintained a half-game lead over HLWW for first place in the Wright County Conference.
The Panthers fell to 6-6 in conference play, 9-7 overall.

Belle Plaine 8,
GSL 6 (8 inn.)

Belle Plaine – The Panther baseball team lost another heartbreaking extra innings game in under a week.

Brody Ruschmeier and Landon Stifter led off with a pair of singles. Both would come around to score on a pair of ground outs to put GSL up 2-0.
Bell Plaine quickly tied the game, getting two runs on three hits and one Panther Error.
GSL scored a run in the top of the third inning to retake the lead 3-2.
Brody Ruschmeier would again lead the charge, getting hit by a Tiger pitch to get aboard.
After a Landon Stifter sacrifice to put Ruschmeier in scoring position, Luke Roepke hit an RBI single to right-center field to score Ruschmeier.
The Tigers answered in the bottom of the third, getting two runs on two hits to take a 4-3 lead.
GSL tied the game in the top of the fourth inning.
Max Hansch led the inning off with a single to right-center field. Hansch came in to score on Brody Ruschmeier’s two-out single to left field.
Belle Plaine retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting two two-out singles to go up 5-4.
The lead would again be traded as Luke Roepke (double) scored on Braxton Streich’s single to center field to tie the game at five a piece.
Max Hansch scored on a Tiger error to give the Panthers a 6-5 lead.
Belle Plaine got the equalizer in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs.
The Panthers were able to reject Belle Plaine, getting a force out at home, but a single by the next batter scored a run, tying the game 6-6.
Belle Plaine loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning. But Panther pitcher Luke Roepke was able to get a weak flyout to end the threat and push the game into extra innings.
The Panthers threatened in the top of the seventh inning as Sam Brown, Brody Ruschmeier, and Landon stifter drew three straight tw0-out walks to load the bases, but the Panthers failed to plate any of the base runners.
A walk-off two-run home run by the Tigers in the bottom of the eighth inning seal the game.
